Long Distance Movers Based in Georgia
Most long distance moves go wrong for the same three reasons. We removed all three: a written estimate that holds, our own background-checked crews, and a delivery window you can plan a closing around. Serving Macon and Warner Robins since 2005.
Long Distance Movers You Can Plan Around
A move across the country is not a local move with more driving. The price is calculated differently, your belongings are covered differently, and the rules that protect you only exist once you cross a state line.
We have been moving Middle Georgia families out of state since 2005 — licensed and insured, Georgia MCA #9314, with our own background-checked crews and a written estimate before anyone touches a box.
Tell us where you are going and when. We will walk the house and give you a real number.
Three Things Go Wrong on Long Distance Moves. All Three Are Avoidable.
The price changes after the truck is loaded. You accepted a number over the phone. Now the truck is full, your house is empty, and the figure has gone up by thousands. You have no leverage and everyone knows it.
Nobody can tell you where your things are. The truck left. Your calls go to a queue. The delivery window was always vague and now it is somehow vaguer, and you are sleeping on an air mattress in an empty house in a state where you know no one.
Your grandmother’s dresser arrives broken and they offer you eighteen dollars. That is not an insult. It is the coverage you were given by default, and nobody explained it to you.
None of this is bad luck. Each one traces back to a specific decision made before your move ever started — usually a decision the mover made and did not mention.
Why Long Distance Moving Quotes Go Wrong
Ask three long distance moving companies for a price and you will get three numbers that are thousands of dollars apart. Not because one is generous and another is greedy. Because they are not measuring the same thing.
Weight or cubic feet
A long distance move should be priced on weight. Weight is verified on a certified scale and you can ask to see the ticket. It is a fact, not an opinion.
Quote it on cubic feet instead and you are pricing the space your things occupy on the truck — which is far easier to underestimate and far harder for you to dispute. That is why the number sounds so good on the phone, and why it moves once your sofa is actually on board. When a quote is priced by volume, ask why.
The word “binding”
- Non-binding — an educated guess. The final bill follows the actual weight, up or down.
- Binding — a fixed price for a fixed inventory. Add a bookshelf on moving day and it has to be rewritten.
- Binding not-to-exceed — you pay the real weight if it comes in under, and never more than the estimate if it comes in over. This is the one that protects you.
Whichever you are given, it belongs in the document, not in the conversation. If a company will not tell you which type you have, you already know something useful about them.
Who is actually driving
Plenty of long distance quotes assume your shipment gets handed to whichever carrier bids lowest that week. You booked one company. A different company’s truck arrives. Nobody told you, and now the people responsible for your belongings are strangers to the people you hired.
We do not broker loads. The crew that wraps your dining table in Macon is accountable for it the entire way.
How We Price a Long Distance Move
We survey your home — in person, or by video if that is easier. Not four minutes on the phone guessing at your square footage. A real inventory, room by room, including the things people always forget: the garage, the attic, the shed, the closet nobody opens.
Then you get a written estimate that states the estimate type, the weight, the crew, the delivery window, and every fee. One number. Nothing discovered on loading day.
That is not a discount promise. Our price is rarely the lowest one you will be quoted, and if the only thing that matters is the smallest figure on the page, we are probably not your movers. What we sell is a move that costs what we said it would, run by people we employ, arriving when we told you.
Who Will Be in Your House
On moving day you hand your home, your furniture and your family’s belongings to a group of strangers. It is worth knowing which strangers.
Our movers are W-2 employees. They are background-checked, they wear our uniform, and they introduce themselves at your door. They are not day labor hired that morning in a parking lot, which is common in this industry and almost never disclosed.
Ask any long distance mover this question directly. You are owed a straight answer, and the answer tells you most of what you need to know.
The Spirit Moves has been doing this since 2005. We are Christian-owned, licensed and insured under Georgia MCA #9314, and we operate out of two real offices — Riverside Drive in Macon and Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins.
The Coverage Nobody Explains Until It Is Too Late
This is the least understood line on any moving estimate, and it is the one that ends relationships between customers and moving companies.
Released value protection is included free by federal rule. It pays 60 cents per pound, per item. Weight, not value. Your 40-pound television is covered for about $24 regardless of what you paid. Your 5-pound laptop is worth $3. Your grandmother’s dresser is worth whatever it weighs.
Full value protection costs extra and makes the mover responsible for repairing the item, replacing it with something comparable, or settling in cash at what it is actually worth.
Most people discover this distinction after something breaks. We raise it before you sign, walk you through both, and list high-value pieces on the inventory in writing. Your homeowner’s or renter’s policy may also cover goods in transit, so call your agent while you are deciding.
Neither option is a guarantee nothing will break. It is a decision about what happens if something does — and you should be the one making it.
What Is Included, and What Is Not
The frustration with moving quotes is everything that shows up later. Here is what never appears as a surprise line on ours:
- Furniture padding and shrink wrap on every move
- Disassembly and reassembly of standard furniture
- Floor runners and doorframe protection at both ends
- Wardrobe boxes on moving day for hanging clothes
- Stairs — no per-flight charge
- Fuel — no surcharge line
What genuinely changes the price: the weight of the shipment, the distance, the crew and hours required, packing if you want it, storage if your closing dates do not cooperate, and specialty pieces — pianos, gun safes, pool tables — that need particular equipment and particular people.
All of it is on the estimate before we start. If you want to compare it against another mover line by line, we would encourage you to. That comparison usually helps us.
How Your Long Distance Move Runs
- Survey. We walk the house and build a real inventory, or do it by video if your schedule is tighter than your patience.
- Written estimate. Estimate type, weight, crew, delivery window, every fee. Questions are cheaper to ask now than on loading day.
- Packing. All of it, some of it, or none. Most people handle their own closets and hand us the kitchen and the fragile things, which is exactly where damage happens.
- Load and weigh. Furniture is padded and wrapped inside the house, not at the truck. Loaded in tiers, tied off in sections, so nothing shifts across six hundred miles. Weighed empty and loaded on a certified scale.
- Transit. One point of contact with a name, and word from the road before the truck is a day out. You should never have to wonder.
- Delivery. We unload, place furniture where you want it, rebuild what we took apart, and go through the inventory with you before we leave.
Where We Move People From Middle Georgia
These are the out of state moving lanes we run most often from Macon and Warner Robins. Familiar routes mean tighter delivery windows and better pricing than a one-off charter to somewhere we have never been.
- Florida — Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, the Panhandle. Our busiest lane by a distance.
- Texas — Houston, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, including the runs that follow Air Force assignments.
- The Carolinas — Charlotte, Raleigh, Charleston, Columbia, Greenville.
- Alabama and Tennessee — Birmingham, Huntsville, Nashville, Chattanooga.
- Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic — Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, usually military.
We run these lanes in both directions, and a large share of the inbound is families arriving on orders to Robins Air Force Base. If your destination is not on this list, ask — interstate moving is what we do, and the answer is usually yes.
PCS and PPM Long Distance Moves
We are minutes from Robins AFB and a large share of our long distance work is military. If you are doing a personally procured move — a PPM, formerly a DITY — the government reimburses a percentage of what it would have spent moving you, and the entire claim turns on paperwork.
What finance will ask for:
- An itemized paid invoice showing services and amount paid
- A certified empty weight ticket, taken with the vehicle genuinely empty
- A certified loaded weight ticket for the same vehicle
- Both dated, legible, and showing the scale’s certification
- A copy of your orders
We supply the invoice in the format finance expects and run the certified scales as part of the job, so nothing comes back marked incomplete. Confirm your weight allowance with the Personal Property Office before you pack — going over it is the expensive surprise that surfaces after the claim, not before.
We say thank you to those who serve, and to seniors and first responders. Tell us when you call.
How to Check Out Any Long Distance Moving Company
Rogue movers are a genuine problem in this industry and long distance is where they operate. Ten minutes of checking is worth it — on us, or on anyone:
- Look up the USDOT number. Every legitimate interstate mover has one, it belongs on their website and their paperwork, and you can verify it and read their complaint history free at fmcsa.dot.gov. A company that will not give you the number has answered your question.
- Check the address is an address — not a mailbox store, not just a phone number.
- Ask whether the crew are employees or day labor.
- Be wary of a large cash deposit up front, or any estimate given without someone seeing your home.
- Read the one-star reviews. Anyone can collect five-star reviews. The one-stars tell you how a company behaves when something goes wrong, which is the only time it matters.
Long Distance Moving Questions
How far in advance should I book a long distance move?
Six to eight weeks for a summer move, three to four off-season. Around Robins AFB the summer fills earlier because the whole PCS season lands in the same weeks. Booking early costs nothing and holds nothing against you.
What counts as a long distance move?
In practice, anything crossing a state line, and generally anything past about 400 miles. The state line is the part that matters — it brings your shipment under federal rules for pricing, weighing and liability.
How much does a long distance move cost?
It depends on weight, distance and services, so any figure quoted before someone has seen your home is a guess. What we will tell you upfront is exactly how it gets calculated and what moves it, then put a real number in writing after the survey.
Will my belongings share a truck with other people’s things?
Ask every mover this. Consolidated shipments are common and are usually what makes a very low quote possible, because you are sharing the trailer and waiting on it to fill before it leaves.
Do I need to be there for delivery?
You or someone you authorize in writing needs to be present to check the inventory and direct placement. Delivery day should not be the first time anyone explains the inventory sheet to you.
What will you not load?
Anything flammable, corrosive or explosive: propane, gasoline, kerosene, paint, thinners, aerosols, pool chemicals, fertilizer, ammunition, fireworks, car batteries, and any opened liquid. Run down the gas cans and the grill tank the week before. Passports, orders, medications, jewelry and irreplaceable documents ride with you.
Can you store my things if my dates do not line up?
Yes. Closing dates rarely cooperate. Understand that a storage gap means everything is handled twice, so it costs more than a direct move. Sometimes it is still the right call — but you should choose it knowingly rather than discover it.
Do you move pianos, gun safes and pool tables long distance?
Yes, and they belong on the estimate. Each needs specific equipment, and a slate pool table has to come apart to travel at all. Mention them when you call so the right crew and gear are assigned.
What happens if something is damaged?
You file a claim, and what you are paid depends on the coverage level you chose before the move — which is why we insist on having that conversation early rather than burying it. We would rather explain 60 cents per pound now than defend it later.
